With the long-term deposit from the Hungarian National Bank contemporary art collection, the Sopron Museum’s holdings are enriched by 31 works. Spanning from the 1970s to the present, the selection shows how painting becomes a sensitive field for questions of mark-making, memory, and the built environment.
The works connect to key tendencies in both international and Hungarian art history — geometric and lyrical abstraction, the afterlife of conceptual thinking in image-making, and an intensified awareness of material and medium — articulated above all through painting, in outstanding artists such as Tamás Hencze, László Lakner, Kamill Major and Márta Kucsora, alongside contemporary positions strongly shaped by Márton Nemes, Dávid Szentgróti and Gáspár Szőke.
More personal and narrative registers of contemporary painting also come into view through works by Péter Ujházi, Dia Pintér, and Balázs Szabó-Lobot. Here, material is not merely a support: layers of pigment, traces, veils, and object-like elements form a system of superimposed surfaces. The works operate as both images and objects: at times painting exceeds the canvas through disciplined grids, at times through improvisational gestures, and at times through structures familiar from digital visual culture. Moving on the boundary between abstraction and narrativity, the works use layering to create a shared visual language in which contemporary experience — personal and collective — takes form, opening new readings within the context of the Sopron Museum.
