There has never been a traveller, and there are still no tourists today, who have not seen or immortalised the symbol of Sopron, the city tower built on Roman foundations. Its perimeter offers an unrivalled view of the city centre and the Lőverek mountains surrounding Sopron - on a clear day you can even see the nearby Alpine ranges. The tower served as the northern gate tower of the city. The lower angular part was built at the end of the 13th century. The cylindrical part dates from the early 14th century. It took its present form, with its Baroque parapet and helmet, after the fire of 1676. The tower is also a symbol of the consciousness and loyalty of the citizens: in the referendum of 14-16 December 1921, Sopron and eight municipalities voted to belong to Hungary. The baroque gate frame was designed by Rezső Hikisch to commemorate this. The group of statues above it (Hungaria gathers the loyal inhabitants of the town around her) is the work of Zsigmond Strobl Kisfaludi. A visitor centre in the building provides information about the museum's exhibitions.
