The legal status of the library was established with the foundation of the predecessor of the Sopron Museum on 22 July 1867.
The mission of the Sopron Museum Library is, without claiming to be exhaustive, to acquire, process, preserve, conserve and research for the benefit of museologists and researchers, traditional books, periodicals and collections (books, periodicals, etc.) on paper and electronic media, relating to the collection and research and cultural activities of the Sopron Museum. The library is not involved in public library services, but provides its collections at the level of basic services to users as defined in the research regulations.

The library's main collection is devoted to works on the history of Sopron and the historic Sopron County (works by local authors who were born in the area or lived and became famous there at the time of their creation, and documents on the settlements and districts of Sopron County according to the administrative boundaries of 1914, and works published in the area). Documents in the library's sub-collections, which support the scientific work of museologists, in the following subject areas: art history, archaeology, ethnography, history, as well as national and local museum publications and periodicals. The library exchanges national and international publications with the museum's publications, and supports the scientific activities of the museum's collections, the institution's basic and complementary activities, the organisation of exhibitions, scientific conferences and other professional events, and the production of professional publications, journals, exhibition catalogues and other museum publications.

Mission statement

The aim and the task of the Sopron Museum Library is to acquire, process, preserve, preserve and explore works on the history of Sopron and the historical Sopron County (works by local authors who were born in the area, lived here and became famous at the time of their creation, and documents on the settlements and districts of Sopron County according to the administrative boundaries of 1912, works published here), primarily for museologists and secondarily for researchers. It also aims to organise, preserve and preserve for posterity the content and form of the so-called special collections (the Storno family library, the library of Endre Csatkai).
