The charming Castle Wall Promenade

Behind the Museum Quarter is the Castle Wall Garden. In the Middle Ages, the city of Sopron was fortified with a triple ring of castle walls. The central city wall is the oldest city wall of Sopron, built by the inhabitants of Scarbantia, the Romans, at the end of the 3rd century, at the beginning of the 4th century. With the creation of the Árpád-era Ispán’s castle, its remains were strengthened with the so-called red rampart. On this rampart, between the inner and central city walls, lies the Castle Wall Garden. The line of the inner city wall is bordered by the Fabricius House, the Tábornok House, and the Storno House, and its two sides are closed by the Megyeháza [County House] and the Fire Tower. On the other side of the central city wall the Castle Wall Promenade is located surrounded by the remnants of the outer city wall.
