The symbol of Sopron

There was no traveller in the past, and there is no tourist today, who did not see or capture the symbol of Sopron, the city tower built on Roman foundations. A splendid view is afforded from its circular balcony towards the city centre and the Lővérek towering in the distance – on a clear day, even a sight of the closer peaks of the Alps can be caught. The tower served as the northern gate tower of the city. Its lower square part was built at the end of the 13th century. Its cylindrical part dates back to the beginning of the 14th century. It acquired its present shape, its Baroque circular balcony and spire after the fire of 1676. The tower is also a symbol of the identity and loyalty of the citizens of Sopron: at the referendum on 14–16 December 1921, Sopron and eight surrounding villages voted for belonging to Hungary. The ornated gate frame commemorates this event, the group of sculptures above it is the work of Zsigmond Kisfaludi Strobl.
