It was originally called Jewish Street, as around 1300 Jewish families settled here. The medieval Synagogue was built at the end of the 12th century and the beginning of the 13th century, and was a tabernacle, an assembly hall and a school in one. It is almost unique in Central Europe. Next to it stood the spital that gave accommodation to journeymen, and the ritual bath that can still be seen today. In 1526, the people of Sopron expelled the Jewish population, so the synagogue fell into decay and was converted into a dwelling house. Its remains were unearthed during the 1967 research, when the building regained its old splendour.
