Modern Age Lapidary

Our Modern Age Lapidary offers a selection from the works of stone sculptors and stonemasons in Sopron and its surroundings in the 17th-18th centuries. A selection, since the most beautiful pieces have fortunately remained in their original locations, in houses, churches, streets and squares. The earliest pieces of our exhibition are 17th-century carvings, and most of them are 18th-century sculptures, coats of arms, and building decorations. In this era, 4-5 master stonemasons lived in our town per generation. Sopron’s art was adapted to Vienna, and its masters had significant Austrian connections. Among the carvings, it is worth highlighting the sculpture György Draskovich II bishop of Győr, the reliefs of the Mary column, and the balcony railing of the old Sopron city hall with the allegorical sculptures, the figures of Truth and Foresight. It is also exciting to see which carving in which way and under what circumstances was included in the exhibition.
