A special experience of space

The dwelling tower of the Tábornok House was built at the end of the 13th century, at the same time as the city wall itself, fitting into the inner city wall of the triple ring of castle walls that surrounds the city centre of Sopron. It is the only one of the eight dwelling towers in Sopron known today that was built into a fortification or wall and does not stand free. The two-storey building with a square floor plan, although it presumably also served as a residential building, primarily served a defense-military function. In the 15th century, it was extended with accommodation from the courtyard, and a kitchen and a stove were also built in its block. Today, most of the tower has been destroyed, the current concrete building is intended to illustrate the mass of the former tower.
