XVII-XVIIIth Century Shrine Monuments

In Sopron, in the garden of the Lenck Villa - also known as the Museum Garden - along the brick wall and the 17th century city wall of ancient stone, are the gravestones preserved for posterity by Sopron's old Lutheran cemetery. The old cemetery was located behind the Berzsenyi Dániel Lutheran Grammar School until it was completely abandoned at the beginning of the 20th century. It was then that the town's amateur researchers (ethnographer Raynald Bünker, ethnographer Sándor Payr and museum keeper Kálmán Csipkés) discovered the centuries-old civil and noble gravestones. This collection is a great treasure for the city. Not only because of its unparalleled artistic and monumental value, but also because it is an important contribution to research on local history and religious history.
