Archaeological exhibition - temporarily closed

The well-known phrase - "Rome is eternal!" - inspired the title of our new archaeological exhibition, since walking along the ancient castle walls, Sopron also seems like an eternally shining city. The first room of the exhibition spans nearly 6000 years, from the chipped stone tools of the hunters of the Middle to Later Stone Age transition to the idols of the Neolithic Age, to the Hasfalva cult object made in the transitional period of the Bronze and Iron Ages. A separate room deals with the centuries of iron, where the figurally decorated urns of the Várhely bring to mind the myths of the early Iron Age, and where we can learn about the material culture of the Celts and the beginnings of local coinage from the Late Iron Age. The exhibition also gives an insight into the lives of the wealthy citizens of Scarbantia from the first centuries of the city, before the city was even enclosed within the walls.
